I headed over to Cabrillo National Monument to pick up a passport and get their stamp. Technically not part of the 4 Corners Tour, but definitely part of the National Parks quest.

I got up at the usual time, and did the usual things, with the added pressure of knowing I was leaving. Fortunately, I had done almost all my packing on Wednesday, so I only had to get my computer glasses and a couple of cables.

Susan had snuck home after saying she was staying overnight with Kathy, so we got to say goodbye in person. I headed down to San Ysidro and got gas as soon as I got off the freeway. It was a good thing, too, as the gas station I had used three years ago was boarded up. I went down to the Coco's, half expecting Boyd to be there early, but he wasn't. I found a phone and wrote down the 'secret' number on the corner 'proof' sheet, and put it and the gas receipt in the envelope, ready to mail.

Boyd pulled in just before 0730, and futzed around a bit getting his stuff ready, then we headed over to the Post Office and took the pictures. Oops, and dropped the envelopes in the mailbox.

Then we headed up the 805 to the 15; traffic was heavy, but pretty well behaved. The weather was drizzly, and I was enjoying it as much as possible, dreading the heat I knew would be coming.

We stopped in Ontario for gas and bladder relief, and as we started climbing Cajon Pass, it started clearing and warming up, until by the time we got off onto 395 it was right toasty. And it stayed pretty warm for the rest of the day, which was otherwise uneventful.

They're continuing to repave and widen 395, to the point where we had to go a half mile past Manzanar, and come back on a piece of the old 395 two-lane. Two years ago, that was the road; it's in pretty bad shape now.

We had reservations in Bishop, so although it was only 1400, the day was done at that point. (Maybe not a bad idea to have a relatively short day to start, and get aclimated.)
