July 2010
Bit of a late start, but we're hoping traffic won't be too bad on a
Sunday morning.
We headed for Macon, and the Ocmulgee National Park, picked because it
was close to our route. There weren't many folks there on a Sunday
morning; perhaps the threatening weather was keeping them away. It's
the site of the what the ranger claimed to be the oldest earth lodge
excavation in the US; we walked down and up to the site from the art
deco visitor center and scrunched down to navigate the passage. We took
a few pictures, the site is pretty, although not spectacular.
Then off again; when we got to the main road, one gps wanted me to turn
left and go back out the way we'd come in, while the newer one said go
right. I figure the newer one has more recent information, so right it
is.
After a few miles, it's apparent that we're not going back to
I-75, despite the older gps's insistence that that's what we should be
doing. I try to see where the new one is taking us, but it seems to be
weaving a matrix of non-freeway connectors. I'm mostly ok with that,
it's the way I like to travel anyway, although it doesn't seem to be
the quickest way to south Florida.*
The day has turned miserably hot, so we're stopping for either water or
gas at least every 90 minutes. We're both pretty beat due to not much
sleep last night, and this is the first day we've had that it's been
hot and muggy right from the get-go. Eventually we get to I-95, the
main east coast north-south route, where we'll pretty much be for the
next week, going one direction or the other. It's signed for 70 mph,
most traffic seems to be doing about +5, with plenty above that, so
that's where we settle.
Mid-afternoon we look at our options, and decide to leave around 400
miles to do on Monday; we have reservations at a Key West motel so it
won't matter if we get there a bit late, and that'll allow us to stop
around 1630 today.
And just before then, there are signs for Titusville, with a selection
of motels indicated; we pull in to the portico of a Super 8 at exactly
1630. There's a Publix supermarket within walking distance (although
the definition of 'walking distance' is getting re-evaluated in this
heat/humidity). Still, groceries for supper, and a semi-early night.
*(Looking at the track, it would be hard to draw a straighter line than
the route we took.)
