2017 Four Corners Tour - The Road to Madawaska

2 July 2017

Restless night--not sure if it was the upcoming holiday that was the cause of all the noise, or the part of town, or 'business' ladies, but I was awakened more than once by some broo-ha-ha or another.

And it rained, although the pavement was pretty dry by the time I went out to uncover the bike, and there was no sign of any in the area. Weather On Wheels (thanks to Bill Edwards) showed the possibility of some later in the day, though.

I may have figured out the GPS anomaly--I have to be very careful when I place routing points--if they're off the road even a little bit, the new Garmin seems to want to cross them, sometimes taking some strange turns to do so. So before I transfer the route I zoom in and get those points right on the road, and that seems to be working.

And I discovered I can create a sort of route on the Nuvi, too, by going in to the "Trip Planner" app and stringing together a bunch of waypoints.

I stayed on US60 northeast out of Amarillo up to Canadian (which I'd hoped to reach on the previous day), and stopped for gas. Didn't need the A/C towel, and it wasn't hot enough to deplete the water much, so it was just in and out.

I'm noticing lots of wind farms--don't think it's because I'm more aware of them--and most of the windmills are turning. I used to drop a waypoint when I happened across them, but they're almost as ubiquitous as gas stations now, so I don't bother.

Approaching the Oklahoma City latitude, the skies are ominously dark to the south; I'd flipped a coin as to whether to pass above or below OK City, and fortuitously picked north. Even so, every so often I had to close my faceshield to keep out the few drops that fell from a fairly clear sky. Never got bad enough that I needed to change gloves or button up the 'Stich, though.

Gassed up again in Guthrie, and started counting down the miles. It's heated up into the low 90s, and the humidity is up, too--not debilitating, but I'll be glad to get to Mike's.

Which I finally do; he and Janie are waiting outside to wave me into the open garage. I unpack some, and while we're inside getting caught up that horrendous storm that was pummeling Oklahoma City moves through and does some pummeling here, too.
