Summer Sojourn, Day 05
We hauled some sand up from the stockpile down at 'the farm' and spread
a layer over the dirt, deep enough so that the concrete would be around
4" deep.
We had some discussion about how (or whether) to slope it down to the
door, and decided to give it a bit of a slope, and eyeball just how to
make the transition once the concrete was poured.
Logistics planning dictated a pile of aggregate to the south...
...the wagon of sand to the north, and the mixer sitting on the forks of the Massey
in the middle.
Once the planning was done, there didn't seem to be any reason not to
get going, so...we did, starting in the northeast corner...
...working south
to the edge of the furnace slab...
...then west,
...and south again.
It took a few loads to get the rhythm—spray in some water, load in the
aggregate, shovel in the sand and the cement, adjust the water and mix
for five minutes, dump and start again. Xavier did the spreading and
finishing while I mixed the next load; Pete, up from Chicago (and
visible in #3) did the timing.
Progress seemed to slow once the area around the furnace slab was filled, but we
figure we're over half done.
