Summer Sojourn, Day 28



The 'mystery machine' is the drive ends from two Allis Chalmers tractors mated end-to-end with some custom machining.

All the assembly was done inside the back of the garage, and there was some concern that it might be too wide to clear the support posts—it just made it.

The operator's seat is from one of those tractors...

...the steering gear is repurposed from a fork lift and drives two hydraulic rams to pivot the machine in the middle. If you look above the universal joint, you can see the piece of (black) flexible gas line needed to allow that pivot.

The steering is a little slow, but at least it turns the machine in the right direction. (There was some concern that it would be backwards.)

We even put a headlight on, for night operations!
