This is a field of ginseng--"shang" in the local parlance. In the wild, it grows under forest cover, thus the distinctive shade cloth. It's a fairly huge crop in Marathon County--it's been said (around here, anyway) that 95% of the commercial ginseng in the US is grown in this county.

Cultivation takes years--the longer you can let it grow, the better--but the more likely it will succumb to some disease, which will wipe out the crop; four to five years is the goal.
